Aventine is a world in the Columba Sector, the closest inhabited world to the Bountiful System.

Aventine’s culture at the time of its rediscovery by the Pathfinder Ship Odyssey was not as advanced as some others, retaining a strong agricultural focus. The planet was inhabited by approximately one hundred million humans.

A remarkable feature of the planet Aventine is a thick debris ring that orbits the planet at an altitude of 5,000 to 8,000 kilometers above the surface. Scientists believe the debris ring was created by the destruction of the planet’s inner moon in a cataclysmic impact. The core of that moon orbits just outside the ring, helping to preserve its coherence and preventing additional pieces from falling to the surface, (although they occasionally do fall from space). When this belt transits the sun, spectacular arrangements of moving shadows are projected on the planet’s surface.

The planet also is noted for a paucity of native plant and animal species; only 77 species of plants, 36 species of mammals, 130 species of fish, 92 species of insect (all butterflies), and 40 species of birds are native to the planets. (No reptiles or amphibians). Scientists think a large number of species were destroyed in the cosmic collision that created the ring system.

The planetary capital is the city of Morning Glory, which is primarily a trading center for the planet’s inhabitants. Prior to rediscovery, there was no planetary scale government, but provincial governors met in Morning Glory for discussions, negotiations, and consultations.

During the Second Aurelian War, Aventine was attacked from space. The New Commonwealth, mistaking this for an Aurelian attack, sent a small task force to investigate. The planet suffered significant damage but escaped major devastation. It was later discovered that the world had not been attacked by the Aurelians, but instead by the Lynx.
